Bali - And what's so special about it

I just got my analog photos from Bali back and it made me sad and happy at the same time. The special thing about taking photos with a film camera is that it really captures the moment. You only have one shot and that makes the excitement while waiting for them to be developed even bigger. Its’s just a different feeling looking at film photos and they always have a cool effect to them.

Let me share some of my favorite moments, places and photos with you.

The Monkey Forest

Number one on my list of favorite places on Bali is definitely the Monkey Forest in Ubud. We went there three times because we couldn’t get enough of the monkeys. Something that makes the visit even more special is bringing bananas with you. You can easily buy them at one of the local markets. But be careful! Hide them in a place, where the monkeys can’t see them because once they do, they will come and get them - and you don’t want a fight with the monkeys, because they will always win.

If you want a special photo with a monkey, just hold out your hand to them (not the babies, they are always protected by their mothers!). If they want to, they will hold your hand or climb onto your shoulders. There’s also employees who help you get a selfie for 50.000 IDR, if you’re too scared to try it on your own.

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces are probably one of the most popular places in Bali, which is why we went there for sunrise. When the first sun rays reach the rice terraces, it gets so magical! But what made our visit there the most special, was this old rice farmer who fit into the scenery so perfectly! He was so kind to let us take photos of him and he told us where to go (because there are many little paths). Sadly, one of our film cameras broke there, so we really only have one analogue photo of it. But that makes it even more precious.

Another thing that makes Bali so beautiful is the numerous waterfalls. The first one we went to was the Leke Leke Waterfall. But we also visited the Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfalls and the Nung Nung Waterfall. If you visit early, you might get the waterfall all to yourself, which is an unbelievable experience. But always keep in mind that you have to hike to these places. The hike to the Leke Leke waterfall was my personal favorite, because we met a couple that was repairing a bridge and we helped them carry the bamboo to their construction site. This is the kind of encounter with the local people, that I like.

But what’s so special about all of this? Can’t you see waterfalls, beautiful nature and monkeys in other parts of Asia, too? Probably. To be honest, I haven’t been to other parts of Asia, yet. This was my first time traveling outside of Europe.

What makes Bali so special for me is that you have so many opportunities to do cool things because the island is so diverse. Bali is so much more than just a tanning-at-the-beach-vacation. There’s the jungle, waterfalls, good vegan food, creative workshops, local markets, a sea turtle conservation centre, mountains and volcanos, temples, yoga classes, snorkeling tours and other islands nearby with even more possibilities. But the most unique thing about the island is the people. I have never met such kind people anywhere else. One reason why I liked the Balinese people this much might be because I feel like we have some things in common. They aren’t pushy, loud or impolite, they seem to be very quiet and introverted. And those are two words that I would use to describe myself. Quiet, introverted but open with people that I like.

Anyways, if you have made it until here: Thank you for reading. Maybe I made you want to explore the island yourself. Don’t hesitate to send me a message, if you have any questions or need recommendations.

Until next time, whenever that might be. :)
